“IT’S just a matter of building and continuing their consistency.”

These are the words of Bill Gadolo, Fiji Rugby Union’s elite pathways and performance manager, after the Fiji Airways Fiji 7s side finished fifth in Perth, Australia.

Gadolo highlighted inconsistency as a key concern for the national team, despite their current position at the top of the World Sevens Series points table.

Fiji shares 48 points with Argentina and Spain but leads due to a superior points differential.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Gadolo emphasised that Fiji showed potential in patches but struggled to sustain it throughout the tournament.

“They showed some consistency in bits, but it’s about sustaining that over the duration of the game and the tournament. Otherwise, they are going down in parts of their performance,” he said.

Fiji’s campaign in Perth was marked by mixed results.

A shocking loss to Uruguay in their opening match set the tone for an uneven performance.

They narrowly escaped against Kenya before producing an emphatic 33-5 win over New Zealand.

However, their journey ended in the cup quarter-final with a loss to South Africa, followed by a 17-5 victory over France in the fifth-place playoff.

When asked about what went wrong in Perth, Gadolo declined to comment, choosing instead to focus on the need for consistency and building momentum ahead of the next leg.

The team now prepares for the Vancouver leg of the series from February 21-24, where they will look to iron out inconsistencies and maintain their spot at the top of the standings.
