The Fiji Volleyball Federation will set its beach volleyball competition schedule after the Western Rally Championship tomorrow as it prepares for the 2023 Pacific Games.

The Western Rally Championship, which has attracted a total of 18 teams, will be played at the multipurpose courts in Lautoka.

Fiji has had great success in beach volleyball at the Pacific Games.

The national side has won a total of eight medals since the sport was introduced in 1999.

The men’s team with Aisake Raratabu and Waisake Suka won the gold medal at the 2011 Pacific Games in Noumea, New Caledonia.

The women’s team has won two gold medals previously.

Mereula Meya and Sainimelia Francis won gold at the inaugural event in Santa Rita, Guam, while Meya teamed up with Finau Waqa to win the gold medal at the 2003 Pacific Games in Suva.

FVF president Kemueli Naiqama said they would field the men’s and women’s teams in both indoor volleyball and beach volleyball competitions.

Naiqama said this year’s Pacific Games was their lone international commitment.

“Beach volleyball falls under our banner,” he said.

“We have already paid for the bonds for the two formats of volleyball which are indoor and beach for the Pacific Games.

“Our beach volleyball competition will start after the Western Rally.

“The plan is to hold the beach volleyball tournaments to select the national squad.

“The Oceania Championship may be held next year but I haven’t received any confirmation.”
