FIJI Deaf Rugby’s participation at the World Deaf Rugby (WDR) Sevens World Championship 2026 remains uncertain as the programme struggles to secure the funding needed for the international campaign.
Head coach Tevita Rokoqiqi says the preparations are ongoing, but financial constraints continue to be the biggest obstacle facing the squad.
“We are planning to go to the World Cup, but the only thing that is holding us back is the finance side,” he said.
The squad currently has 18 men and 11 women in training as coaches work towards the final selection of the tournament.
Despite limited resources, Rokoqiqi said the programme continues to operate and develop players ahead of the global event.
“We wish we could be treated equally like other international teams,” he said.
Players and families are currently involved in fundraising efforts to help cover travel and competition costs.
Rokoqiqi said the team has also benefited from access to a more stable training base at Gospel High School grounds after previously lacking consistent facilities.
“We are so thankful to the principal of the school that he allowed us to train at the Gospel High Ground,” he said.
With the World Cup approaching, the programme is hoping for greater financial support to ensure the team can travel and compete on the world stage.
“We need support. The most important thing is prayer, but financially we also need help.”
