The Living Wage for Fiji campaign will be launched by the Fiji Trade Union Congress next year.

National secretary Felix Anthony revealed this at the Pacific Regional Tripartite Conference & 50th Anniversary of the ILO in the Pacific in Nadi yesterday.

“We continue to campaign with the Government on the National Minimum Wage,” he said.

“And next year, the FTUC will launch its campaign for a Living Wage for Fiji

“We look forward to the conclusion of discussions within the 10 sectoral Wages Councils that this Government has revitalised.”

Mr Anthony reiterated that decent work remains a priority for Fiji.

“Our Employment Relations (Amendment) Bill in Parliament goes a long way to address this deficit.

“Decent work can no longer just be a slogan.”

He said emerging issues such as AI and issues surrounding climate change, and just transition have become part of discussions.

“We need to ensure the rights of workers are also embedded in the policies and decisions that are made. The interests of women, children, and the vulnerable groups or minorities must also be taken into account.

“We must strengthen and develop social security mechanisms. The recent pandemic exposed not only the lack of social security mechanisms but also the absence of them not only in Fiji but in the region as a whole. The tripartite partners must work together and ensure this deficit is addressed.

“It is our collective vision of achieving decent work, alleviating poverty, meeting the targets of the social development goals, and building a thriving labour market that is dynamic, inclusive, and resilient.”
