The Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) has made a submission to the Ministry of Education that a teacher protection policy be drawn up.

The union’s submission comes in the wake of growing concern about attacks on teachers and the fact that there is no such policy that protects teachers.

The FTU said in a newsletter message to all teachers that a submission was made to the ministry to formulate a policy on teacher protection while at their workstations.

“Despite numerous calls by the FTU in this regard, nothing has happened,” the union said.

“The recent attacks on teachers is of grave concern to the union. Henceforth, FTU strongly believes that a teacher protection policy will include protection from unnecessary harassment and threats from external and internal parties.”

The FTU said student behaviour also continued to raise concern among all stakeholders.

“There is no policy that protects teachers at work and noting with grave concern the risks that teachers work under due to student misbehaviour.”

Earlier it had been reported that many teachers had resigned as a result of the bad behaviour of students.
