THE Fiji Teachers Association (FTA) is raising concerns over the health and wellbeing of teachers following the deaths of three members last week.
FTA general secretary Paula Manumanunitoga said the association was increasingly dealing with cases of teachers dying at a young age, while two members were currently in India receiving medical treatment funded by the association.
“Last week we had three deaths, all members of FTA,” he said.
The association provides financial assistance to members facing serious illnesses, including overseas treatment and medical evacuation.
“We provide $40,000 to a member that needs medical evacuation. All his medical expenses are paid for, his airfare, and for an aid to somebody to go with him.”
FTA also provides a $7000 funeral insurance payout to families of deceased members.
However, he said the growing demand for medical and welfare assistance was putting pressure on the association’s funds.
FTA members contribute $10 every fortnight, amounting to $260 annually.
Mr Manumanunitoga urged teachers to prioritise their health by attending regular medical checks and reducing excessive yaqona, alcohol and tobacco consumption.
He said while the FTA remained committed to supporting members and their families during times of illness and hardship, the recent deaths highlighted the need for early medical attention and healthier lifestyles.
