The Fiji Sugar Corporation is reviewing the future use of sugar railway lines as part of efforts to reduce transport costs and improve efficiency in the industry.
Sugar Minister Tomasi Tunabuna said poor maintenance in some areas had contributed to inefficiencies.
“They want to address inefficiencies caused by a lack of maintenance in some areas,” he said.
“They want to reassess ways to minimise costs, especially with the current oil and fuel crisis. We are also looking at long-term plans for the sector.”
He did not reveal whether more rail services would be discontinued after the closure between Ba and Tavua months before the 2026 crushing season.
He said the closure of some rail lines was largely driven by declining cane production.
He said the assessment by FSC was ongoing.
