The Fiji Sugar Corporation has reintroduced an apprenticeship program to make up for the loss of trade workers.
Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh said the apprentice program would be tailor-made to cater for the needs of sugar mills.
He said the company had lost a high number of trades people over the past years and the program was removed by the past government.
“We have had discussions with the company executives of Pacific Polytech and they will do a tailor-made program for FSC.”
Mr Singh said the program was aimed at equipping apprentices with the knowledge and skills of dealing with machines used at the mills.
“Pacific Polytech will bring in qualified and semi qualified people to do the apprenticeship program and will also include on-the-job training so we can quickly bring up the number of trades people,” he said.
“As far as FSC is concerned, we have a very experienced chairman Nitya Reddy, who’s a former FSC accountant and he is in discussion with the FSC chief executive officer Bhan Singh on a daily basis in regards to these plans.”
