Tough measures will provide solutions to Fiji’s debt problem – but any attempt to remove zero-rated VAT (value added tax) on essential items, must be accompanied with immediate support to the most vulnerable. University of the South Pacific (USP) senior lecturer in economics Dr Neelesh Gounder said this in an interview on The Fiji Times online news portal The Lens@177. He said the onus was on Government to ensure that any imposition of VAT on essential everyday food items or any increase in tax, did not adversely affect the poor – and suggested direct cash transfers be made to the poor.

That’s the big news on the front page of The Fiji Times for Thursday. June 8.

In the second story on Page 1, the iTaukei Land Trust Board has been ordered to pay $360,240 to a man who was evicted from a 13-acre native land in Nadi in 2000 after the agriculture lease was terminated. This follows a Supreme Court ruling which also highlighted that the leasing arrangement which began in 1971 as a three-acre tenancy-at-will saw a new 20 year term signed in 1982 where acreage had increased to 13 acres.
