TWENTY nine individuals travelling out of the country last year declared they were carrying $500,000 and more, says the Fiji Intelligence Unit in its 2022 annual report that was tabled in Parliament last week. The total value of currency declared by travellers in the Border Currency Reports (BCR) last year was about $38 million compared to only $2 million in 2021. The FIU also said the total value of suspicious transactions reported to them in 2022 was $25 million. Meanwhile, the FIU paid its nine permanent staff $823,000 in 2022, compared to $730,000 in 2021. That’s the big news on the front page of The Fiji Times for Tuesday, July 18.
The second story is on the trial of former prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama and suspended commissioner of police Sitiveni Qiliho in the Magistrates Court in Suva. Now this case is attracting a lot of attention.
