Joey Chieffer’s slim frame is deceptive. Because the 19-year-old’s “big” voice and his ability to hit notes in the high end of the musical register conjures up images of someone much more sizeable.

The former DAV College student said his song Don’t Deserve Your Ways was based on personal experience.

“It’s about the dark moments in my life and how I got through it,” the Tovata resident said. Chieffer began composing when he was 13 and has never looked back since.

He is one of 10 finalists vying for up to $9000 in prize money – $5000 grand prize courtesy of Westpac, $3000 People’s Choice Award courtesy of The Fiji Times and $1000 Best Performance Award courtesy of Kaila! in the 2023 Domo Vou Talei song contest. Domo Vou Talei is the brainchild of the Australian High Commission and was first held last year.

The 10 finalists are being vocally trained by award-winning music superstar Sunia Soko Loga, will be produced by legendary producer – Phil Dakei and have their music videos shot by Dave ‘Mr Grin’ Lavaki under his company FirstFighter.
