COMMUNITIES across the Yasawa Group are receiving vital maritime transport support as the Government vessel MLC Bai Ni Takali undertakes a seven-day trip under the Government Shipping Franchise Scheme.

The vessel unloaded in Yasawa-i-Rara last week to serve communities across the island group, providing access to transport under a scheme designed to support maritime routes where regular commercial services may not be financially viable.

Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau said the service reflected the Government’s commitment to maritime communities and affordable transport.

“The Coalition Government will continue to assist our maritime islands by providing affordable and reliable transport services and ensuring our communities remain connected,” Ro Filipe said.

The Government Shipping Franchise Scheme is intended to maintain services on uneconomical maritime routes where commercial operators may not be able to provide regular services.

For communities in the Yasawa Group, the current seven-day voyage provides a link to the wider transport network while supporting continued connectivity across the maritime islands.
