Former machinist awaits ruling after sentencing submissions

A FORMER machinist at the then-Public Works Department joinery depot will know of his fate come February 19.

This after Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) lawyer Sanjana Dutt filed sentencing submissions in court for Saiyad Aziz.

Aziz who is charged by FICAC with one count of soliciting an advantage appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne yesterday.

The matter was called for mitigation and sentencing submissions.

Magistrate Somaratne said he would need to go through sentencing submissions from the prosecution and the mitigation submissions from the defence counsel before sentencing the accused.

Aziz who had pleaded guilty to the charge on the last occasion was represented by Mohini Pillay from Reddy and Nandan Law firm.

He has been convicted of one count of soliciting an advantage.

The offence occurred in March 2014 while being a prescribed officer attached to the then-PWD as a machinist.

He solicited an advantage of $300 from Nitinesh Naidu without the general or special permission of the president.
