A former lieutenant of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) Unit during the takeover of Sukanaivalu Barracks in Labasa in 2000 has sought forgiveness from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
Rupeni Vosayaco, who commanded 56 men at the time, presented his official apology to RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai yesterday in Labasa where he has been incarcerated for the past 24 years.
“I came to ask for forgiveness and it was granted to me,” he said.
Following his presentation, Mr Vosayago said his heart was free, and he no longer held grudges against anyone.
“The Lord did this all for me. I really thank the commander for leaving his place of authority and came down.”
Mr Vosayago also condemned any type of political upheaval.
“All coup cultures are wrong.”
His journey towards redemption was marked by a transformative experience while incarcerated.
“I am planning to start a poultry business at home, but I will take things one step at a time.
“Even during my time in prison, I was preparing for this. I am grateful to the RFMF for accepting my apologies.”
Sukanaivalu Barracks Commanding Officer Major Penasio Mamao said it was only through God that this could happen.
“We are only humans, I thank God as this is his work,” Major Mamao said.
Yesterday was their first encounter since the 2000 mutiny.
“It took 24 years for us to meet again after the events of 2000.
“Yesterday was our first time to meet again. I would like to thank the commander for his effort, for allowing us to meet again. I totally forgive him for what he had done.”
He said Mr Vosayaco was a changed man.
