It was at the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in France in 2018 when rookie Melbourne Victory defender Claudia Bunge came to the realisation that she wanted to pursue a career as a professional footballer.
Although New Zealand failed to make it past the group stage they produced a resolute defensive performance in their second match to claim a memorable 0-0 draw with hosts and eventual semifinalists France.
Bunge played at centre-back in that match and said it was a key turning point in her career.
“That was a moment where I realised this is something that I really want to do, and really want to pursue,” she said.
“I remember we were playing against France, who were hosting the World Cup, and there were thousands of people at the game, and we ended up drawing with them 0-0.
“The feeling in that game was indescribable. I don’t get that anywhere else in life and it was a real wake up moment for me.
