ALPHA International has again given freely to Fiji, this time assisting the Fiji Corrections Service.
Based in Canada and Britain, the organisation worked with Gleanings for the Hungry Organisation and gave a container load of vegetable soup packs for inmates.
FCS is in the process of distributing these food packs to all its institutions around the country.
Assistant Commissioner Peniasi Kunatuba received the gifts and said the kind gesture from Alpha International would assist the institution in providing inmates with nutritious rations.
General secretary for the Gleanings for the Hungry Organisation, Steve Witmer, said this was the third container sent to Fiji.
“The first container was sent in 2008 and the second one was sent in 2012 after the country suffered from floods and a cyclone,” Mr Witmer said.
He said Alpha for Prisons was part of the Alpha International organisation and operated in 74 prisons across 124 countries around the world where their programs were tailor-made to suit the inmates.
Mr Witmer said it was about bridging the gap between prisons and communities and was similar to the concept of Fiji’s Yellow Ribbon Project.
He added the vegetable soup packs have been certified as nutritionally balanced.
