FIJI Airways men’s 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau says fitness will decide team selection for the upcoming HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Kolinisau said sevens rugby is about fitness and players who are not physically ready will not be picked.
“You can be the best in your position, but if you are unfit, then it’s no use,” he said.
“Sevens is about fitness. No matter how skillful or strong you are, sevens will catch you.”
He added that the team is working on setting a fair standard where every player knows what is expected of them.
He said fitness must match talent and no player will be selected based on name alone.
“I’d rather take someone who is 100 percent fit than someone who is skilled but only able to give 70 or 80 percent,” said Kolinisau.
Kolinisau also highlighted the importance of preparing players in different roles.
“Most of the players are being trained in different positions so we can be ready if anything happens. It’s better to plan ahead than to panic when injuries hit,” he said.
He praised players like Pilipo Bukayaro and forward Sakiusa Siqila, saying they stood up well under pressure in training.
Kolinisau made it clear that the Fiji’s 7s team is focusing on teamwork, fitness and commitment over reputation or flair.
“The only X-factor we need is teamwork. That’s what wins the games,” he said.
Meanwhile Fiji takes on New Zealand on Sunday at 6.06am followed by Australia at 9.07am.
Their last pool game will be against Spain at 12.13pm.
