The National Development Plan (NDP) for Fiji includes a significant focus on enhancing the responsiveness of the Fiji Police Force to drug-related issues.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Policy, Research and Doctrine) Aporosa Lutunauga has expressed strong support for the NDP, highlighting its potential to address critical challenges faced by the force.

“All the challenges in relation to the Fiji Police Force that are currently being faced and into the future are embedded in this NDP,” ACP Lutunauga said.

“We look forward to working and cascading this plan down to an operational level.”

He said key areas of focus included capacity and capability-building within the force to ensure it remained effective and responsive to the needs of the Fijian people.

According to ACP Lutunauga, the NDP outlines a strategic direction for the police, incorporating issues raised by the police in relation to law enforcement and drug control.

“Specifically now that the Government has got a narcotics bureau on its own,” he said.

“While that’s a platform the nation can fight from, we will continue to fight internally from our Drugs and Serious Crime Intelligence Unit.”

ACP Lutunauga said the plan proposed strengthening the police’s narcotics bureau and expanding its capabilities through the Drugs and Serious Crime Intelligence Unit. The NDP aims to provide the necessary support and resources to bolster the police force’s efforts in drug prevention and enforcement.

“By addressing these key areas, the plan seeks to improve the overall effectiveness of the Fiji Police Force and contribute to a safer and more secure Fiji.

“Everything we advocated for has been incorporated into the plan.”
