A Fiji National University PhD student has described meeting King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London as a defining moment in her academic journey, strengthening her commitment to research for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Ana Tuiketei, a recipient of the prestigious King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Programme PhD Award, attended Commonwealth Week events in March 2026, where she met the King and Queen.

Tuiketei said the experience of engaging with global leaders and fellow scholars had significantly inspired her research focus.

She also attended the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey, themed “Unlocking Opportunities Together For A Prosperous Commonwealth,” which highlighted collaboration and empowerment across member nations.

“To meet His Majesty King Charles III for the first time and to be introduced as a King’s Fellow was a proud moment,” she said.

“He was encouraging in my PhD pursuit and curious about how my research would impact SIDS and support long-term sustainable development.”

She added that meeting Queen Camilla and participating in various Commonwealth events further reinforced her passion to contribute to global development discussions.
