Newsroom leaders in Fiji have been given an opportunity to teach at the Fiji National University’s Pacific Centre for Communication and Journalism in Samabula, Suva.
This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Fijian Media Association (FMA) and FNU which was formalised at the 8th Pacific Media Summit in Savusavu yesterday.
FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba said the partnership was something that the national university was thinking about for a while.
“We look to the Pacific Media to support us in our work,” she said.
“And you journalists are like us, we look for truth even though resources may not be around.”
Meanwhile, FMA president Rosi Doviverata thanked the vice-chancellor and FNU for this historic partnership that will support journalists in Fiji and across the Pacific.
“For many years most of us in this room send our reporters to cover everyone else’s big moments, today that story is ours,” Doviverata said.
“Vice- Chancellor and the Fiji National University, thank you… you have given our industry something that is rarely offered – the opportunity to lead here in Fiji and across the Pacific.
“As we heard this morning (Wednesday), our industry is changing faster at any point and the people best placed to say what a journalist needs to know are the people doing the job every day.
“And that is what makes this different, the industry is not a guest in this program, it is a funding partner.”
