The Fiji National Rugby League will put more focus on women’s rugby league next year by creating a premier competition in all its six zones.

The concept of the competition will be similar to the men’s Vodafone Cup.

This will help create a pathway to the national women’s team known as the Fiji Bulikula.

The Fiji Bulikula failed to qualify for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup because of lack of international matches.

The 2021 RLWC which was supposed to be held in England has been postponed to next year after tournament organisers faced several unique and complex challenges with the most significant being the non-release of up to 400 players, match officials and staff members from the NRL competition in Australia.

FNRL interim chief executive officer Don Natabe said the women’s rugby league competition was something that they would ramp up next year in each of the six zones.

He said this will run alongside the men’s Vodafone Cup competition.

“Next Thursday and Friday we will hold a women’s rugby league conference in Nadi,” Natabe said.

“We will invite all the players in the Western Division to the Blue Light Village Hotel along Nadi to attend.

“Even those who are not registered with FNRL and are interested in rugby league can also be part of this conference.

“The programs presented will be on what rugby league is all about. A similar conference will also be held in Suva from December 16-17.

“The six zones under the FNRL banner include, Ra/Tavua/Ba, Lautoka, Nadi, Sigatoka, Suva and Nasinu.”
