THE FIJI Water Flying Fijians will look to set the tone for their Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup campaign when they face Canada in their opening match tonight.
Head coach Senirusi Seruvakula said the team was focused on starting the campaign strongly, with several players looking to make their mark in the tournament.
“It’s very important, important for the group to perform well, most of these players are from Drua,” Seruvakula said.
The Flying Fijians are also defending their Pacific Nations Cup title, but Seruvakula wants his players to focus on the task in front of them rather than the pressure of retaining the championship.
“Enjoy yourselves, play as a team,” he said.
Seruvakula acknowledged that Canada would provide a strong challenge, but said Fiji would concentrate on its own performance.
“Canada is a very good side, they have been doing well, we just focus on ourselves rather than worrying about Canada,” he said.
The match will also be an important opportunity for Seruvakula and his players, with the Flying Fijians yet to register a win under his tenure.
“This is important for us, especially these players to prove themselves, one step at a time.”
Seruvakula stressed the importance of maintaining discipline throughout the match, saying Fiji could not afford lapses in concentration.
“Discipline is important in the whole of 80 minutes,” he said.
He said the players had responded well during preparations and were enjoying their training sessions.
“Players are doing well, they enjoyed training.
“They all looking forward to this game.”
The Flying Fijians will be hoping their preparation translates into a strong performance when they meet Canada tonight.
