THE Flagstaff Sentinels rugby league club, a community-driven team dedicated to youth development, made an impressive debut in the Vodafone Cup competition with a convincing 30-12 victory over the Makoi Bulldogs last Saturday in Suva.

Despite being one of the four new clubs entering the competition the side came determined and prepared putting the competition on notice with a dominant performance against a seasoned side such as the Makoi Bulldogs.

For many the victory may come as a surprise but for club president Albert Wong the victory underscores the clubs unity in fulfilling it’s mission.

Emerging from humble beginnings on a small playing field at Indira Gandhi Memorial Primary School, the club has grown into a beacon of hope and opportunity for disadvantaged youth in the greater Samabula area.

Founded by President Wong, whose vision was inspired by his son and head coach Peter Wong, the club was born out of a desire to transform lives through sport and mentorship.

“Rather than seeing problems, we saw potential,” said Wong.

“Our mission is to provide a safe, inclusive environment that promotes youth empowerment, life skills, crime prevention, and long-term development through Rugby League.”

The Flagstaff Sentinels have faced many challenges, with many of their players coming from backgrounds marked by unemployment, school dropout, and social exclusion.

The club’s core initiative, the Vale ni Veimaroroi Programme—meaning “A Shared House of Protection”—offers a structured and values-based environment focused on discipline, mentorship, and community engagement.

“Our focus has always been about giving back to the community and creating opportunities for young people to discover their potential,” Wong explained.

“Our club theme is “SENTINELS – Guardians of Our Youth and Community.” A Sentinel is a guide, protector and community steward. Through sport, we seek to protect vulnerable youth, guide them towards positive life pathways and strengthen the communities we represent.”

The club’s strategic plan for 2026–2028 outlines its commitment to guiding young men towards leadership, education, and employment, using rugby league as a vehicle for social development rather than mere recreation.

As they prepare to make their competition debut today against the Makoi Bulldogs at 2 pm at Bidesi Park, the Flagstaff Sentinels carry with them the hopes of their community—a testament to resilience, discipline, and the power of sport to change lives.

Today marks not just a sporting debut but the continuation of a movement to empower the youth of the greater Samabula area through rugby league.
