FIX your discipline then everything will fall into place.
These were the words of former director secondary education and adviser to schools, Satindra Deo, at the Fiji Principals Association annual conference on Monday.
He said school principals must focus on the pulse of their school as they were living entities.
He said the issue of drug cases, bullying and truancy that were creeping into schools were worrying and school principals must step up their role.
“Discipline should be first and foremost prioritised and everything will fall into place. Principals need to be visible and seen to be moving around the classrooms,” he said.
“We need to go one step further and be functional.
“If we sit back and stay confined to our office, we won’t know what’s happening in our own back yard.”
In an hour-long speech, the retired school principal challenged more than 100 school heads to set higher standards for their respective schools.
“You have to have the feel of the pulse of your institution, schools have a soul, they are not dead.”
He added if school heads needed changes done, then they had to start with themselves first.
“Set a standard for yourself then nurture your students.”
