THE opening of the largest indoor fitness centre in Fiji has brought renewed focus on the country’s growing health crisis, with leaders calling for urgent action to promote healthier lifestyles.
Speaking during the launch of True Fitness at the True Mart Complex in Navua yesterday, Grace Road Group president Daniel Kim highlighted the severity of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Fiji.
“Today, over 80 per cent of all deaths in Fiji are caused by NCDs such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension,” he said.
“Even more concerning, nearly every adult – over 95 per cent of the population – has at least one major risk factor.”
Mr Kim stressed that fitness was central to reversing the trend.
“Fitness is not simply about appearance or physical beauty. It is the state where the body is strong, functional, and full of energy. Fitness is built through discipline, sustained by consistency and determination.”
Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo said the facility reflected a shift towards prioritising well-being.
“By stepping into the fitness and wellness space, Grace Road is responding to a real and growing need in our community and in our future,” Mr Vosarogo said.
“This is more than just a gym, it is a space that encourages discipline and promotes healthier living, and support for both physical and mental well-being.”
He added that such developments were no longer optional.
