THE current location of the Labasa fish market is a high risk for pedestrians, according to the Fiji Roads Authority’s asset manager North Amit Deo.
Located before the Labasa bridge, the market, experiences a high volume of foot traffic and heavy vehicle movement, making it a dangerous location.
Mr Deo said FRA had wanted to meet the executives of the Labasa Town Council to discuss this matter.
“We have been advised though that the current location of the Labasa fish market is temporary,” Mr Deo said.
He highlighted the issue after a request for the construction of a pedestrian crossing in front of the fish market was made during public consultations on the review of taxi permits.
“The question is to be directed to the Land Transport Authority as this consultation was organised by them.”
In response, council chairperson Paul Jaduram said a three-acre piece of land at the Naiyaca subdivision has been secured for this purpose.
“It will be located on the other side of the river, behind Extra Supermarket,” he said.
