Firecrackers have no significance in terms of celebrating the Hindu festival of lights known as Diwali, says Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) president Dr Ram Raju.
In a statement, Dr Raju said firecrackers were “a total waste of hard earned money”.
“Indulging in the use of firecrackers is sheer madness, especially at this time of our lives as hundreds and thousands of dollars are spent or blown away within minutes on this useless, noisy, deafening activity,” he said.
Dr Raju added firecrackers were also a health nuisance as they polluted the air and had caused countless injuries in the past.
“Many end up in casualty departments with some serious eye injuries and burns and it would be wiser to spend some money and time with your dear friends and relatives who have very little left to enjoy.”
He said the best possible way to celebrate Diwali this year was by providing support to someone in the community who might have been badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Liven up their homes, invite them and share the festive season with love, goodwill, sweets and other delicacies.”
