Fire safety at home during cooking

In this week’s fire safety page, the National Fire Authority (NFA) is going to look at cooking fire safety.

Cooking fires are one of the major causes of home fires in the country and it is very important for homeowners to be mindful of cooking fire safety at home.

Here are some of the important cooking fire safety tips:

• Never leave cooking unattended;

• Check your food regularly during cooking and remain in the kitchen or cooking area until the food is cooked;

• Don’t wear loose clothing or hanging sleeves while cooking;

• Keep children away from the cooking area;

• Keep anything that can catch fire such as wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, towels or curtains away from your stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen during cooking;

• Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup; and

• Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home in ensuring that all stoves, ovens and electrical appliances are turned off.

The NFA also advises members of the community to visit or contact their nearest fire stations for such practical fire safety lessons to be conducted in the community as fire safety is everyone’s responsibility and we must all take heed of fire safety advice seriously in our home to avoid a fire.
