A VACANT home at Tavakubu Back Rd, Lautoka, was destroyed by a fire on Monday.

The property, which had not been occupied since 2015, belonged to 70-year-old Satiya Wati Singh.

The National Fire Authority said firefighters responded to the emergency call around 4.30am.

“Upon arrival at 4.45am, firefighters found the structure fully engulfed in flames,” an NFA report stated.

“The crew quickly established a hose delivery line from the appliance water tank to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.

“Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze using water from both responding appliances while refilling from a nearby underground fire hydrant located approximately three kilometres from the scene.”

The NFA determined from initial reports that individuals previously seen in the area were burning plastic coverings from copper wires.

“It is believed that this activity may have contributed to the fire; however, a full investigation will be conducted by the National Fire Authority to determine the exact cause.”

The incident sparked fresh concerns from NFA’s chief executive officer Puamau Sowane over poorly maintained vacant properties being a fire hazard.

“Vacant homes can become easy targets for illegal activities such as the burning of copper wires, vandalism, or trespassing, all of which can increase the risk of fire,” Mr Sowane said in a statement.

“We strongly urge property owners to ensure that vacant buildings are properly secured, regularly monitored, and kept clear of combustible materials.

“Simple measures such as securing entry points, maintaining the surrounding area, and engaging neighbours or caretakers to keep watch can significantly reduce the risk of fire.”

Mr Sowane added that suspicious activities, particularly those involving open burning or trespassing in abandoned properties, should be reported immediately.
