Police have requested permission from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander to interview individuals alleged to have been involved in the events leading up to the death of Jone Vakarisi, as investigations enter their final stage.
This was confirmed by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu who said the remaining phase of the investigation was to interview those who had been identified as being with Vakarisi at the time.
“I can confirm that the phase left now is to interview those that have been identified with the victim at that point in time,” Mr Tudravu said.
He said a request had already been made to RFMF Commander, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai.
“If he can allow the investigation team to interview those that have been alleged for being involved in that,” Mr Tudravu said.
“That is where we are at this point in time.”
His comments come after the Ministry of Policing stated that investigations into the case were nearing completion.
Major-Gen Kalouniwai had earlier confirmed that more than 60 witness statements had been obtained and that suspects in the case were expected to be interviewed.
Vakarisi was reported dead on April 17 after being taken to the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, Suva for questioning on the night of April 16 in relation to weapons and ammunition reported missing by the RFMF.
