THE Namosi Challenge has proven to be a boon for tourism in the Namosi area.
This is according to co-founder of Talanoa Treks, Marita Manley, who has been instrumental in the development of the Namosi Challenge.
“I would like to believe that the Namosi Challenge and the operators behind it have put Namosi on the map — especially for the Suva crowd,” Manley said.
“It wasn’t intended like that but has been a good outcome. We are really excited about the fact that this year’s challenge has sold out six weeks ahead of the event.
“So, it has become an event on the calendar that people look forward to.”
As a member of the management board for the Suva Marathon Club, Manley has been involved since the event’s inception.
Manley, who has volunteered with the Suva Marathon Club since 2014, recalled that the idea for the Namosi Challenge emerged in 2019 during Fiji’s first wave of COVID-19 restrictions.
“The desire to escape the confines of Suva led to a collaboration with Namosi Eco Retreat, a fellow member of the Duavata Collective, to explore the possibility of relocating the event to Namosi,” said Manley.
She added the Duavata Initiative has played a significant role in the success of the Namosi Challenge.
With three Duavata members — Namosi Eco Retreat, Domoika Adventures, and Gasaudrau Farm — integrated into the course, the initiative fosters collaboration among local operators.
Talanoa Treks and Rivers Fiji also contribute support, enhancing the overall experience for participants.
The Namosi Challenge, often referred to as Fiji’s toughest race, invites runners to experience the stunning highlands of Fiji, featuring steep hills, majestic mountains, and breathtaking scenery.
Scheduled for June 7, this event offers a variety of race options, including a half marathon of 21 kilometers, an individual marathon of 10 kilometers, and a team marathon where groups of four each run 10 kilometers to complete a full marathon.
