Fijians for Pacific AFL team

AFL Fiji has confirmed at least three or four Fijian players would be joining the U16 South Pacific AFL team in camp in Brisbane, Australia in April.

They would be joining players from Papua New Guinean, Nauru, Tonga and the Solomon Islands teams to play in the 2017 U16 Queensland AFL State Championship.

AFL Fiji development officer Simon Highfield said, they would be choosing from the players who played in the Australia Football League (AFL) U15 Oceania Cup last week.

“There are possibly three or four Fijians in the team, and those who have been selected will do some specialist training with myself and some staff in Fiji before they go to Brisbane in April,” Highfield said.

He said they would then work on some basic skills of AFL with the selected players before they (the players) leave for Australia.

“It’s a South Pacific team, PNG did not compete in the Oceania Cup but a majority of the South Pacific team would be Papua New Guineans,” Highfield said.

The the team will be named on Friday.
