FIJI Airways Fijiana seven’s development team head coach Taione Ratu is enthusiastic about the upcoming 2024 Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship, as his squad consists mostly of new and young players who typically only participate in local tournaments.
Ratu views this tournament as a valuable opportunity for the girls to gain exposure.
“The team entered camp last Sunday to begin preparations for the championship, focusing on building team cohesion and fine-tuning their attack and defense strategies,” said Ratu.
Ratu is satisfied with the progress made so far, noting that the team is starting to come together and jelling well with each other.
“Out of all the experience players and new players coming in the team, the age group is from 18 to 25-years-old, in terms of players game time, the knowledge of the senior players, has been great, and they have been guiding the team well.
The championship promises to be a challenging competition, with hosts Solomon Islands posing a significant threat.
Ratu believes that the team’s familiarity with the rugby field will give them the necessary tools to succeed.
“We will be competing in a tough tournament, looking at our pool we got hosts Solomon Islands in there, so the girls know the task to accomplish.
“The girls are also not new in the rugby field, so it will be a task they will accomplish.”
