Team Fiji swimmer David Tolu Young smashed his own national record in the 50-metre freestyle yesterday at the Australian National Swimming Trials in Adelaide Australia.

He clocked 22.15 seconds, breaking his previous Fiji record of 22.29 seconds.

The blistering swim placed him fifth overall in a stacked field, just behind Australian world leader Cam McEvoy.

“It’s unheard of for a Fijian swimmer to be beating most of the Aussies at their own national trials,” said Fiji swimming legend Carl Probert.

“Tolu just made a big statement for Fiji.”

Tolu’s 22.15s swim would have ranked him first in New Zealand, third in Canada, eighth in the USA and fifth in Australia.

He won the B-final and now shifts his focus to the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau this month and then to the World Championships in Singapore next month.
