Landmark moments such as the FIJI Water Flying Fijians’ 24-19 victory over Wales at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on Monday are important in the continued mission to foster a formidable force that will continue to tower over tier one nations in the future.
According to head coach Mick Byrne, those moments in particular are essential in carving a dynamic chapter forward for Fiji rugby.
“Coming from where we’ve come from, to keep beating the tier one teams, we’re going to have to get our landmark moments and we know that,” coach Byrne acknowledged.
With their win over the Welsh marking a ruthless defeat for a Warren Gatland coached side, currently on a 10-match losing streak, Byrne added their close proximity to tier one nations through Test matches as such served as an incentive to constantly remain within it.
“We want to live in this arena, The Nations Cup is coming and we want to be part of that and I hope we are a part of that,” he remarked.
“We’re going to be coming in against these teams every year now and it’s been great for us.”
While he acknowledged their losses in previous meetings with other tier one nations, he remained optimistic in stating the experience gained for the team was a vital one.
“We get four tier one teams and we’ve been beaten easily twice and we’ve had a win today so for us to get through to 2027 and experience those moments on a weekly basis is going to be great for the team,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Flying Fijians face Spain this Sunday at 2am.
The team’s last assignment for the year will be the Test against Ireland next weekend.
