Fijian boxers to face Tahiti’s best

FIJI will host an amateur boxing team from Tahiti next month as boxing attempts to attain the Olympic dreams says national coach Pauliasi Ratu.

He made the comments at the second instalment of the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association Summer Series at the National Fitness Centre yesterday afternoon.

“We will try to organise a good team for the Tahiti boxers. Tahiti have been very strong in boxing in the region,” he said.

“There is a lot of improvement compared to the previous fights. The only thing we have to work on is the basics of boxing.”

Yesterday three bouts took place in the Summer Series.

Lighthouse Boxing Club boxer Jemesa Kean showed his class against Eceli Tuinicagi in the welterweight division.

Kean, 23, started the onslaught from the starting bell. Kean had Tunicagi shielding most of the time.

Kean’s powerful jabs and body punches resulted in a technical knockout win.

“This is my second fight as I am new to the sport,” Kean said.

Ratu said there were some new boxers yesterday.

“We want more boxers to come and take part in the competition,” he said.

In the light welterweight division Jone Koroilagilagi defeated Jimi Nalawa on points.

Meanwhile, in the light heavyweight bout Manueli Matiyavi won on a second round knockout against Charlie Lolohea of Levu Boxing Club.
