Fiji Weightlifting head coach Henry Elder says they will prepare lifters to compete at the upcoming Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in September.
Elder says this will be the first time Fiji will be hosting the event, and they are expecting more than 40 countries to participate.
“It’s called the Weightlifting Fiji Carnival, and it will be a two-week competition,” Elder said.
“The first week is the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship and the second week will see to the World Masters.”
Elder said the competition is expected to be held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
“It will be held here at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.”
“So, we will be having top athletes from other parts of the world and the Pacific, so we are all excited and looking forward to the competition.”
“Though this is the first time we’ve held the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, we’ve already hosted the World Junior Championships which is a much bigger competition than this.”
Meanwhile, Elder said Pacific Games triple gold medalist Taniela Rainibogi will be competing in this championship if he does not qualify for the Olympics.
“Right now we are just waiting for the International Weightlifting Federation to announce who has qualified for the Olympics.”
