Fiji National Rugby League acting chief executive Don Natabe has confirmed there will be a schoolboys’ and schoolgirls’ rugby league teams formed this year.

Natabe said there were a number of Australian secondary schools interested to play matches in the country.

“We had teams from Fiji that travelled to Australia last year, and it was a success, so we would like to form those teams again this year,” he said.

Selection will be conducted under the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League, with players to be chosen from the Vodafone Trophy competition.

“We are looking to lock in the dates for these matches, but first we need to prepare our players well ahead,” Natabe said.

“We will also need to make sure these matches do not affect the school calendar for the players.”

He said they hoped to host those matches during the term two school holidays, which was in July.

“This should be enough time for us to prepare both teams.”

Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League media officer Laisiasa Corerega said they were excited to form the two teams, and were looking forward to selecting players from schools participating in the Vodafone Trophy.
