The removal of the grounded Blue Lagoon Cruises vessel, MV Fiji Princess, is expected to take between one to three months as recovery efforts continue following damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Vaianu.
Blue Lagoon Cruises said the vessel could not be safely refloated after it ran aground on April 4 due to the cyclone, which later caused further structural damage leading to its retirement.
“The process to remove the ship is currently expected to take anywhere from 1–3 months, with the exact timing subject to ongoing assessments, planning, and approvals,” the company said.
The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is being kept updated and has supported the recovery efforts.
The company said the operation is being carried out with the assistance of expert consultants, professional salvors and insurers, with a strong focus on environmental protection.
“We want everyone to be assured that the safe removal of the ship and the ongoing protection of the surrounding environment are of paramount importance,” the statement said.
Blue Lagoon Cruises added that it is also working to contact affected guests and provide alternative arrangements as quickly as possible.
