Fiji ports meet international standards

FIJI’S international ports of call are now 95 per cent compliant with the Fiji Maritime (ISPS) Regulations 2014, which gives effect to the ISPS code.

The ISPS code is the International Ships and Port Facility Security Code. It prescribes the requirements for security measures necessary to address international ships and port facilities that interface with foreign going ships.

This means that all facilities within the boundaries of international ports of call should comply with the ISPS code national legislation that gives effect to the ISPS code.

Fiji has a total of 21 port facilities. As of January 1 this year, 17 ports are compliant, one non-compliant and three inactive. International ships no longer use the three inactive facilities.

Fiji Maritime Safety Authority said it was a challenge to ensure these facilities were compliant.

“However, compliance has been made possible through MSAF’s close cooperation with Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd and other international bodies for conducting training, facilitated risk assessments and development of security plans for the non-compliant facilities in Fiji.”
