Fiji officially opens Jakarta mission

THE Fiji Embassy in Jakarta has opened doors of its Honorary Consul in Surabaya City which was opened last Friday with the inaugural ceremony attended by the 23rd Mayor of Surabaya, Her Excellency Tri Rismaharini.

In attendance also was the representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Santo Darmosumarto, the Founder and Chairman of Tahir Foundation, Dato Sri Prof. Dr. Tahir, and Investment Fiji’s International Manager, Kamal Chetty.

In her inauguration speech, the Lady Mayor of Surabaya, Tri Rismaharini highlighted the significance of the event. It now opens the opportunity for the people of East Java and Surabaya to engage deeper with the Fiji Embassy in Jakarta and with Fijian businesses and government departments in various areas of cooperation.

Ms Rismaharini highlighted the recent developments and improvements in Surabaya, including infrastructure, social, education, environment and services, and commented that the opening of Fiji’s Honorary Consul was a timely event.

Dato Sri Prof. Dr Tahir, the founder and chairman of Tahir Foundation, highlighted the expected progress and deep collaboration the new facility would usher in to his home town.

Born and raised in Surabaya, he now wants to give back to his home town through the creation of such opportunities where foreign countries can facilitate deeper engagement with the people and local government of Surabaya City.

The Fiji Embassy staff look forward to an extensive engagement in Surabaya City in the next immediate six months with the first courtesy call to the office of the Lady Mayor, Tri Rismaharini, secured for November 22, 2019.

Surabaya City is the second biggest city with modern and well-established infrastructure.

It is considered a moderate multi-ethnic and multi-religious society with a working-age population of approximately 2.5 million people.

Surabaya City is situated in East Java province with strong ICT sector and is rich with well-educated human capital resources.

It has a thriving economy that annually contributes almost one-third to Indonesia’s national GDP. It is an important financial hub and is politically stable with a reputable democratic political governance structure.
