FIJI needs an investment of $3.34 billion to ensure 100 per cent of its energy needs are met from renewable sources. This was the word from Infrastructure Minister Jone Usamate.
He made the comment while commissioning the $308,000 Amgali settlement rural electrification project in Nadi last Friday.
“Our country is blessed with renewable energy resources including hydro, solar and wind to name a few,” he said.
“Hydro-electricity has been the mainstay of our renewable energy sources.
“Monasavu and Nadarivatu meets more than 50 per cent of our electricity demand.
“To achieve our target, Government would need an investment of $F3.341 billion ($US1.671b) .
“EFL together with Government has identified some potential projects in Ba including the Lower Ba and Qaliwana Hydro Projects and Solar Grid-Connect Project to supplement our current electricity supply.”
Mr Usamate added that Government aimed to provide electricity access to all Fijians by 2021 and also wanted to have all Fiji’s energy to be derived from renewable sources by 2030.
