The Fiji under-15 junior hockey teams had a thrilling encounter against the visiting Australian Wanderers on Wednesday at the National Hockey turf, with mixed results showcasing both strengths and areas for improvement.
In the boys’ category, the Wanderers Emus edged out Fiji 2-1, but Fiji bounced back with a dominant 14-0 victory over the Wanderers Goannas.
The girls’ teams faced tougher competition. The Wanderers Emus defeated Fiji 2-0, while the Wanderers Goannas held Fiji to a 1-1 draw.
Coach Marcus Hicks remains optimistic, noting that these matches are providing valuable lessons and international exposure for the young players.
“These games are helping us grow as a team and identify where we need to improve,” Hicks said, adding that they are focused on refining strategies and building a solid core group for future competitions.
The Australian Wanderers, a touring group that includes teams from various sports, were well-prepared after months of training. Fiji’s teams, however, had limited preparation time due to a last-minute shift in the age category from under-18 to under-15.
“Preparation wasn’t ideal, but we’re proud of how our players handled themselves,” Hicks said. “These matches are invaluable for their growth.”
The coach highlighted the importance of international exposure at this level, which was unavailable to many during his playing days.
“Our young players are lucky to have this opportunity,” he said.
“At their age, we only dreamed of such experiences. This exposure will help them as they grow in the sport.”
With a renewed focus on strategy, the teams are eager to take the field again, aiming for even stronger performances.
Meanwhile the two sides will continue their matches today at 10am.
