The Digicel Fiji national women’s team has started preparations for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers in Samoa from February 7-19.

Coach Angeline Chua has chosen a 35-member squad for the competition, including two players based overseas.

“Currently, 29 players are in camp in Ba, and more local players are expected to join soon. US-based players Trina Davis and Preeya Singh will also join the squad in the third week,” said Chua.

The Fiji Kulas squad includes top senior players from the Pacific Games team as well as the best performers from the Young Kulas team.

Chua has emphasised the positive bonding between players of different generations and the guidance of senior players in terms of the team’s culture.

She highlighted the ample time they’ve had to prepare a strong team, with senior players having already participated in the Pacific Games in early December.

“Fitness testing and monitoring of players’ body weight and fats have been ongoing at every camp to identify those needing extra attention.” she added.

Chua said the Fijian value of duavata (unity in iTaukei) and the importance of working together for the team’s success was part of the team. The goal is to build individuals and contribute collectively to the team’s strength on the field.

Looking ahead to the Olympic qualifiers, Chua expressed the aim to top their group by winning all matches and scoring many goals.

This strategy is designed to potentially face defending champions New Zealand in the later stages of the competition.

The Digicel Fiji Kulas find themselves in Group A alongside Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and American Samoa.
