Fiji is always there for you. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said this to members of the Fijian community in Wellington, New Zealand on Tuesday night while updating them on Fiji’s national development priorities.

He said his visit to Aotearoa affirmed the importance of New Zealand as a friend and development partner to Fiji in strategic areas of trade, defence and policing, climate change and sports.

“Fiji fully appreciates the opportunities New Zealand has given you but as I told the Fiji–New Zealand Business Council yesterday (Monday), Fiji is always there for you,” Mr Rabuka said.

“The Coalition Government looks forward to welcoming all Fijians back to Fiji, whether for the short-term or long-term.”

Mr Rabuka also took the opportunity to update those in attendance about national events that were organised in Fiji last month, saying that if “we are to move forward, we are to take stock of who we are and carry that into the future”.

He also highlighted Fiji’s efforts in promoting regional solidarity.

The PM at the same time, acknowledged the Fijian community’s contribution to both countries.

“I also commend you for supporting us by sending your remittances, investing your skills, time, resources and effort back into Fiji.

“For that I extend the gratitude of the Fijian Government to you.

“If there is something that I can pass onto you tonight (Tuesday), it is to make the best use of your opportunities in New Zealand.

“Raise your children to be law-abiding and useful citizens. Teach them to love others and be wise in their management of time.

“Fiji will always be there for them and the door will always be open for them to return, whether on holiday or for work or for retirement.”
