Fiji has lost a true son of Labour’s values, said Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry on the passing of prominent lawyer and former attorney-general Anand Singh.
Mr Singh, 71, passed away at the Middlemore Hospital in Auckland last week.
“He was a true crusader of Labour’s values,” said Mr Chaudhry.
“A champion of human rights and the rule of law. His wise counsel will be sorely missed at a crucial time in the party’s history as we prepare our build up for the 2022 general election.”
Mr Singh was attorney-general in the Labour-led coalition government of 1999 and was among those who were held hostage at gunpoint in Parliament during the May 19, 2000 coup.
He had been appointed Fiji Labour Party president a year ago.
Mr Singh is survived by three children and a grandchild.
