A group of young creatives from Dudley High School in Toorak, Suva, are set to make a splash at this year’s Student Designer Show, bringing with them a collection that blends innovation, sustainability, and artistic expression.

Dudley High School is one of the 25 confirmed schools participating in the Fiji Fashion Week 2026 Student Designer Show presented by Fiji Water, highlighting the growing interest and talent emerging from secondary schools across the country.

Home Economics teacher Nishita Mani said seven students would represent the school on the runway. The team includes two student designers who worked collaboratively to create the collection, supported by five student models who will showcase the garments. Each student has played a vital role in turning their shared vision into reality.

Their collection, titled Wave Muse, draws inspiration from the graceful movement, strength, and beauty of ocean waves. Reflecting Fiji’s natural surroundings, the theme captures fluidity and elegance while incorporating a modern design perspective. Through this concept, students explored how nature can influence fashion in imaginative and meaningful ways.

The garments feature a combination of recycled and sustainable materials paired with lightweight fabrics that allow ease of movement on the runway. The chosen colour palette — shades of blue, crisp whites, and subtle hints of green — mirrors the ocean and natural environment, reinforcing the theme’s connection to Fiji’s identity.

Mani highlighted that sustainability played a key role in the design process, with inspiration drawn from Fiji Water. This influence encouraged students to think critically about environmental responsibility in fashion. The use of recycled materials, including plastic bottles, reflects their commitment to raising awareness while demonstrating creativity and innovation.

Beyond the runway, the experience offers students valuable lessons that extend outside the classroom.

Participation in the show has allowed them to build confidence, develop practical garment construction skills, and understand the importance of teamwork. It also provides a platform to present their work to a wider audience and gain insight into the fashion industry.

Among the seven students are one boy and six girls, each contributing unique ideas and perspectives to the collection. For some, the experience has sparked a deeper interest in pursuing fashion design as a future career, opening doors to further study and opportunities in the creative field.

Mani’s message to her students and aspiring designers is simple: remain confident, embrace learning, and never be afraid to experiment. She believes that fashion is a powerful form of self-expression, and with passion and dedication, it can lead to exciting possibilities.
