FIJI is actively exploring new technologies, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and improving the energy efficiency of its airport operations.

Ministry of Civil Aviation permanent secretary Salaseini Daunbuna made this comment while delivering Fiji’s country statement at the Third Regional Aviation Ministers Meeting (RAMM3) in Suva yesterday.

Ms Daunabuna said Fiji was aware of the environmental challenges facing the aviation industry, particularly in the context of climate change.

She said Fiji had been at the forefront of the impacts of climate change and it understood the need for sustainable practices across all sectors, including aviation,

“Fiji supports the adoption of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) carbon offsetting and reduction scheme for international aviation (CORSIA) and is committed to reducing emissions within our aviation sector,” Ms Daunabuna said.

“We also urge our regional partners to collaborate on creating pathways that allow small island developing states like Fiji to fully participate in global initiatives for sustainable aviation.”

Ms Daunabuna said Fiji believed in regional cooperation in the aviation sector, and noted the importance of strong air connectivity.

She said as a key regional hub, Fiji emphasised the need for improved regional air transport network by supporting air connectivity between Pacific island states and to the rest of the world.

“We are committed to working with our Pacific neighbours and global partners to increase air service connectivity and improve airport infrastructure.

“It is essential we prioritise the development of a regional aviation strategy that allows for the free movement of passengers and goods, making our region more integrated and accessible.”

She said Fiji acknowledged the need for ongoing collaboration to maintain a safe and sustainable aviation sector, and supported efforts to adopt international protocols to ensure resilience of the industry in the face of future global challenges.

“Fiji is committed to expanding its digital infrastructure, including the integration of e-gates and digital passenger processing systems which we recognise can improve operational efficiency.”

She said Fiji remained committed to working with all regional partners to ensure the long-term success, safety, sustainability and growth of its aviation sector and the regional aviation family, of which regional collaboration and collective action would be critical.
