Today, as we honour 56 years of Fiji’s Independence, we reflect with pride and gratitude on a defining moment in our nation’s history.
On October 10, 1970, Fiji embarked on its journey as an independent nation, charting its own course and shaping the values, identity, and aspirations that continue to guide us today.
As we come together under the grace of God, alongside our families, friends, and communities, I extend my warmest wishes to all Fijians for a joyful, peaceful, and memorable Fiji Day.
Independence Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is a celebration of who we are as a people, how far we have come as a nation, and the future we aspire to build together. It is a time to honour the sacrifices and contributions of those who came before us while reaffirming our commitment to a stronger and more prosperous Fiji.
We do not celebrate independence as a single moment in history. We celebrate it every day in the choices we make, the values we uphold, and the future we build together. Every act of kindness, every effort to strengthen our communities, and every contribution towards national development reflects the spirit of independence and nation building.
As we celebrate Fiji’s 56th Independence Day, let us reflect on what truly defines us as a nation: a resilient and humble people united in diversity; a country that honours its faith, culture, and heritage while embracing progress and innovation; and a proud Pacific nation recognised for its commitment to peace, democracy, and development.
These qualities have shaped our journey and continue to inspire confidence in our future. They remind us that while we may come from different backgrounds, cultures, and traditions, we are united by our shared love for Fiji and our desire to see our nation succeed.
We all proudly sing “God Bless Fiji” and embrace the vision of “Forever Fiji” with hope, confidence, and optimism for a brighter tomorrow. As our noble blue banner waves proudly in the breeze, it stands as a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and promise for every Fijian. The Fiji Flag serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that we will always stand together through both times of joy and moments of challenge. Every time we see our flag flying high, a deep sense of national pride fills our hearts, strengthening our identity, our shared values, and our unwavering commitment to our beloved Fiji.
As citizens of this great nation, we each have a responsibility to contribute towards Fiji’s success. Progress is achieved not by the efforts of a few, but through the collective commitment of all. By working together with mutual respect, understanding, and a shared sense of purpose, we can create greater opportunities for our people and build stronger communities across the country.
At The Fiji Times, we remain deeply humbled to have journeyed alongside the people of Fiji throughout the years. For more than a century and a half, we have remained committed to serving as the voice of the nation, championing freedom of expression, access to truth, and the right of every Fijian to be heard.
“The Fiji Times – Your Voice Since 1869” is more than a slogan; it is a promise that has endured through generations. Through periods of change, challenge, and celebration, we have stood with the people of Fiji, sharing their stories, reflecting their aspirations, and supporting the principles of truth, fairness, and accountability that are essential to a vibrant democracy.
True to the enduring spirit of “For Fiji, Ever Fiji,” we reaffirm our pledge to continue serving the people of Fiji with integrity and purpose.
As we commemorate the 56th Anniversary of Independence, let us celebrate our achievements, honour our past, and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. Let us continue working together to build a Fiji that is peaceful, prosperous, inclusive, and equal opportunity for every citizen.
As our national flag flies proudly across our islands, may it remind us of the sacrifices, vision, and determination of those who built this nation. Let us honour their legacy by upholding the values they cherished and by working together to ensure an even brighter future for generations to come.
Happy Fiji Day 2026. May God Bless Fiji and her people.
