Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama opened a smart nursery at the Koronivia Research Station on Wednesday which was fully funded by the Canadian Government under the Canada Fund For Local Initiatives.

While speaking at the event, Mr Bainimarama said the smart nursery was a vital part of their long term effort to ensure Fiji had a food supply that could not be unduly disrupted by climate change and extreme weather events such as the 14 cyclones that had struck Fiji since 2016.

The non-resident High Commissioner of Canada to Fiji, Joanne Lemay, said as ocean states with large maritime jurisdictions, Canada and Fiji shared many priorities and collaborated in areas such as ocean management, fisheries and resilience to climate change-induced natural disasters.

Canada had provided $330,000 for the construction of the smart nursery and other associated activities.
